Chiropractic Care for Postpartum Women

A look at what ailments postpartum women have, why they can become injured, and how chiropractic care can help.

WHY IS IT VALUABLE?

After giving birth, there are many reasons why it is very valuable for women to see a chiropractor. Carrying extra weight in your abdomen when you are not used to it can throw your back out of whack fairly easily. In addition, during labor, as the baby descends through the birth canal, the bones of the pelvis can shift and misalign. This is common especially if the baby is posterior. Regardless of the length of labor or size of the baby though, subluxations or misalignments of the spine and pelvis are common during labor and lead to back pain after the child is born.

WHAT ABOUT AFTER THE BIRTH?

Oftentimes as the baby grows, there are additional stresses put on women’s backs that were not there before. Some of these include; poor posture during breast or bottle feeding, carrying car seats, extra body weight, lack of sleep, lack of time to exercise, etc. Going untreated, these stresses can lead to lower back pain, sciatica, upper back pain, headaches, neck pain, wrist and elbow pain, and more.

HOW SOON SHOULD YOU START CARE?

Because of these potential threats it is important for postpartum women to start recovery or preventative care soon after childbirth. In the eight weeks following labor and delivery, the ligaments that loosened during pregnancy begin to tighten up again. Ideally, women should see a chiropractor within the first two weeks so that joint problems brought on during pregnancy can be treated before the ligaments return to their pre-pregnancy state. This will help prevent muscle tension, headaches, rib discomfort, and shoulder problems.

The benefits of chiropractic care are widespread, and effective for all sorts of different people. Postpartum women are just one of the many groups of people who can benefit from looking into chiropractic care.

  2. Carpal tunnel syndrome is defined by webmd.com when the median nerve becomes pinched due to swelling of the nerve or tendons or both. The median nerve provides sensation to the palm side of the thumb, index, middle fingers, as well as the inside half of the ring finger and muscle power to the thumb. When this nerve becomes pinched, numbness, tingling, and sometimes pain of the affected fingers and hand may occur and radiate into the forearm.
