Chia Seed Powder Recalled Due to Salmonella Outbreak By Keri Gans
Are you a fan of chia powder? Before you add any to your meals today make sure it isn’t one of the brands that has been recalled due to a salmonella outbreak.
According to a report by the CDC, as of June 2, 2014, a total of 17 persons infected with salmonella have been reported from 10 states. The outbreak was linked to organic sprouted chia powder made by Navitas Naturals. Tweet this news!
The company recalled Navitas Naturals Organic Sprouted Chia Powder, Navitas Naturals Omega Blend Sprouted Smoothie Mix, and Williams-Sonoma Omega 3 Smoothie Mixer with specific “best by” dates. Two other companies, Advantage Health Matters and Back 2 the Garden, also recalled products. They include Organic Traditions Sprouted Chia Seed Powder, Organic Traditions Sprouted Chia and Flax Seed Powder, and Back 2 the Garden Sprouted Chia Seed Powder.
In the midst of this food safety scare, chia seeds, not the powder, could be a great alternative. I personally use chia seeds every day in my oatmeal because they are a good source of fiber, protein, and omega-3 fatty acids. Just one tablespoon packs 6 grams of fiber and 3 grams of protein for only 77 calories. I find that the extra protein and fiber makes my breakfast more satiating.
Chia powder, which is simply ground chia seeds, provides 80 calories, 6g fiber, and 4g protein per 3 tablespoons. Given the comparison, I prefer to go with the whole seeds since you get more nutrients per tablespoon. Both chia seeds and powder can easily be added to salad, smoothies, yogurt, or cereal.
Possible signs and symptoms from a salmonella infection could include: vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, fever, chill, and a headache. If you think you might be infected, go see your doctor immediately.
